Before The Lights Turn Green - Montréal, 2009
This is to be a collection of portraits of families and individuals that currently live in my street block where there are about 150 housing units that are home to some 300 to 400 individuals. While life inexplicably brought us together to share this tiny piece of land, the only thing we all have in common for certain is that we all hit the same traffic light every morning when leaving our homes, whether we walk, drive or bike. Beyond that point, after these traffic lights turn green, lays a big mystery; we work and shop in different places, we enjoy or despise different spots in town, every day we come back home feeling one way or another. Occasionally we stumble upon each other somewhere. With these portraits I had no intention to go beyond the green light and uncover the mystery of our endeavors in the city labyrinth; it’s the stillness within our retreat that I am after; it is the faces of my neighbors, some of whom I’d never met before, that I want to retain.
